Feeding strategy of common palm civets <iParadoxurus hermaphroditus/i> in Sabah, Malaysia

*Nakabayashi, M.(Kyoto Univ.), Henry, Bernard.(Sabah Univ.)

The feeding habit and habitat utilization of common palm civets <iParadoxurus hermaphroditus/i>, a frugivorous mammal in Sabah, Malaysian Borneo was studied from August 2010 to September 2011. In this study, the habitat was roughly divided into two categories, forest and forest edge. The feeding habit was investigated by analysis of feces and fallen fruit census. The utilization of forest and forest edge was investigated by sighting frequency based on line transect census, trap success and the number of estimated locations of radio-collared individuals. Analysis of fecal contents showed that fleshy fruits of pioneer species were the primary food comprising over 90% of the collected feces of common palm civets. The fruit availability, especially pioneer species was significantly higher at the forest edge than that in the forest. Trap success was significantly higher at the forest edge than that in the forest, but sighting frequency and the number of estimated locations showed no significant differences between forest and forest edge. However, there was no evidence of avoidance of forest edge from these results. The common palm civets often utilize forest edge and feed on pioneer species. This habit could be a response to the habitat with low fruit productivity such as the lowland tropical rainforest of Borneo and other parts of western Malesia.
