Seasonal changes in ladybird beetle communities along an urban-rural gradient

*Akiyama, H., Yoshida, T. (Tokyo Univ. Agri. Tech.)

The ladybird beetle communities were investigated in urban parks along an urban-rural gradient to examine their response to urbanization in the Tokyo metropolitan area in Japan. We selected four urban parks from urban to rural area; Hibiya, Komaba, Fuchu, and Hachioji. We found 284 individual and 12 species of ladybird beetles in the four habitats during April to November 2011. The species richness and abundance of ladybird beetles were largest in Fuchu, while the diversity index of them was higher in Hibiya than in Fuchu. Harmonia axyridis was most abundant in every habitat. Seasonal changes of ladybird beetles were different among four habitats. In Fuchu, ladybird beetles had higher densities in middle June and middle September. While in Hibiya and Komaba, no individuals of ladybird beetles were found from August to November. These results suggest that ladybird-beetles sustained their diversity but had different seasonal changes in the urban parks with recent urbanization.
