Evaluation of biodiversity and ecosystem services in coastal area: How will it be improved by incorporating fine-scale spatial information?

Hiroya Yamano (NIES)

Coral reefs have high biodiversity and high value of ecosystem services, including fisheries, tourism, coastal protection and formation/maintenance of beach and reef islands. Habitat mapping of coral reefs by remote sensing is one of the most feasible ways to estimate biodiversity and ecosystem services of coral reefs at a broader spatial scale, because the habitats could surrogate distribution of other organisms such as fish. Recent advances of remote sensing technology allow mapping with higher spatial resolutions. In this presentation, I overview recent progress of coral reef habitat mapping as well as adjacent land use by remote sensing, with some prominent examples for estimating biodiversity and ecosystem services of coral reefs.
