We have tried on before-and-after evaluation of mangrove restoration project in abundant shrimp farming area of northern Vietnam. Recently various ecological services of mangrove wetland have been re-realized. However, since the 1980s in Vietnam, mangrove wetland and its ecosystem are critically endangered by rapidly increasing of shrimp farming industry and deforestation. On the other hand, integrated shrimp farming system is very difficult to keep sustainable management. As a result, economically inefficient abundant shrimp ponds are increasing gradually.
To these abundant shrimp ponds area, long and steady mangrove restoration project have been continued. Our practical test site in Vietnam was Dong Rui region of Quang Ninh Province. Our objectives are to quantify the change of aquatic organisms and environmental condition for before and after of the reforestation activities. In this approach, we integrated the result of ecological monitoring and topographical information on-site in GIS. Finally, we discuss the relationship between the abundance of benthonic organisms and topographic information (elevation, submergence time etc.) of tidal area.
