Different usage of nest cells by Japanese shrew-mole (Urotorichus talpoides)

Matsuyama, R., Hayashi, F. (Tokyo Metropolitan Univ.)

Moles (Talpidae) have been said traditionally to use each chamber of their tunnel systems for different purpose such as sleeping, hunting, food storage, and defecation. The Japanese shrew-mole Urotorichus talpoides is a small-sized mole and forages on the ground surface more frequently than the typical large-sized moles. In this study, we observed all behaviors of the field-caught mole in an artificial tunnel system for successive 8 nights. The artificial tunnel was made of plaster and had three chambers along the single tunnel. At night, the mole was video-recorded through a transparent cover on the tunnel under the weak light (6-8 lux). As a result, most moles used the chamber at the deepest part as a sleeping site and the other chambers as some food storage sites. Almost all feces were found outsides the tunnel. Thus, they used chambers for different purposes. At night, they repeated a short active phase and a slightly longer resting phase than the former. In several cases, the resting period tended to be longer as the previous active period became longer.
