Testate ameobae as paleolimnological proxies

Testate amoebae are unicellular organisms enclosed in a solid shell. Previous palaeolimnological works have shown that testate amoebae provide valuable information about palaeoecological conditions. This poster presents the detailed testate amoeba record from a sediment sequence from Lake Lautrey spanning the Lateglacial-Holocene transition in west-central Europe. A previous high-resolution multi-proxy record from the same sequence defined the succession of climatic events for the Lateglacial-Holocene transition (15.7-11 ky cal. BP). Results suggested possible relations between testate amoebae and climatic and other environmental changes. First, variations in assemblage composition, as well as in the accumulation rate were assessed as response to major successive climatic phases (i.e. Oldest Dryas, Bølling/Allerød Interstadial, Younger Dryas, Preboreal). Secondly, decreases in the accumulation rate preferentially characterized the minor short-lived cooling events, such as Older Dryas event or Gerzensee oscillation. Moreover, by comparison with the terrestrial vegetation, the testate amoeba record provides further evidence for the fast response of aquatic organisms to environment and climate changes. In addition, the influence of organic matter inputs is suggested as an important determining factor for testate amoeba assemblages.
