This study was carried out to evaluate quantitatively soil degradation in forest trails of Mt. Jiri, the southern Korea. Mean soil erosion amount on the forest trails was 0.0015 m3/ m2 between Inweol and Gumgeo areas, 0.0018 m3/m2 between Dongang and Suchol areas, and 0.0027 m3/m2 between Suchol and Chungam, respectively since the trails have been opened to public for leisure activity in 2008. The soil hardness was significantly higher in 5 cm than in 10 cm depth. Soil porosity of 0-7.5 cm depth was 1.4-1.5 times lower compared to 2008. In additions, soil bulk density was 1.6-3.1 times higher in the trails compared to the natural forest areas. The results indicate that soil in the trails could be degraded by increased visitor activity and an effective policy will be required to reduce the soil degradation from visitor loads in forest trails.
