The role of cities in the global carbon cycle is still poorly understood, urban soil carbon biogeochemistry is in its infant stage. The objectives of this study are:(1)identify spatial pattern of soil carbon of green space in Beijing;(2)explore characteristics of soil respiration of typical lawns along an urban gradient;(3)investigate the effects of urban environments on soils carbon in the metropolitan areas. We sampled 379 surface soils(0-10cm) of green space inside 6th ring road of Beijing, and measured the contents of Soil Organic carbon(SOC) and some other chemical properties. And we also monitored soil respiration rate(Rs) of 16 typical lawns along an urban–rural gradient by LI6400 soil chamber monthly for one year. Results showed that the content of SOC ranged 1.68-61.28g/kg,which varied with measures of land use and distants to the urban core. An obvious seasonal change was observed in the soil respiration rate, with the maximum in July-August and the minimum in December-next January. The sensitivity of lawns soil respiration to temperature(Q10)was from to 1.92 to 3.25.These data suggest that urbanization has caused a disconnect of ecological pattern and processes in soil carbon within the urban setting. And we will explore this kind of carbon dynamics responding to urbanization process through some controlled experiments this year.
