Simulating Future Land Change in the Humid Tropical Watersheds Using LanduseSim: A case of Batang Merao Watershed, Indonesia

Firdaus, R (Hiroshima Univ.), Pratomoatmojo, NA (ITS), Nakagoshi, N (Hiroshima Univ.)

As land change simulation can support important information to landscape planning, this research introduces the application of LanduseSim tool to simulate future land change in Batang Merao Watershed, Indonesia. This land-use modeling tool is capable of developing frameworks for land planning processes such as explaining and evaluating current land use, generating planning scenarios, and simulating future land change. Simultaneously, GIS and LanduseSim techniques were employed to generate results of future land change from 2010 to 2030. Results indicate that land degradation has been a main constraint for land use change. Future land management should be focused on land conversion of agricultural land, mixed plantation and shrub/bush to forest to maintain the conservation function of forest protected area. As a case study conducted in this watershed, to gain broader understanding, it is recommended to expand to more humid tropical watersheds. Implementing this simulation in land management provides an initial answer to the possible future of land management, to improve planning and to optimize management practices in humid tropical watersheds.
