Remote sensing technology can provide important information on biological characteristics and physiological status of plant organs. Hyperspectral measurement able to measure physical appearance and physiological characteristics of plants because it can estimate biochemical concentrations of the material. Cherries are the most popular ornamental trees in Japan. Two hundred cultivars with diverse floral characteristics are known in Japan. In the present study, to explore the potential for evaluation of biological parameters of flowering plants, we examined spectrum reflectance of flowers of 23 cherry cultivars using spectroradiometer and correlation between their spectral properties and biological characteristics. Spectral properties of 23 cherry cultivars highly varied, and could be discriminated each other using specific wavebands regions determined by derivative analysis. There were no significant relationship between selected bands and morphology and phylogeny of cherry flowers. Understanding of responsible factors causing the large variation in spectrum reflectance among cherry cultivars would be vital in application of remote sensing technique to identification and monitoring of flowering plants.
