Ecological research is based on comprehensive and continuous data collection, which requires long time and financial cost. We developed a mobile application to collect environmental samples (MappEnv) to collect ecological data efficiently and comprehensively. At present, plant pictures are collected as environmental samples. The application enables users to take and share plant pictures with their sampled location. Its unique function is a set of designed scores to evaluate the users’ movement during data collection. The scores and ranks among all the users are shared and notified, which will keep the users motivated and competitive. In this work, we have developed an Web application (MappEnvWeb) for MappEnv and its users, which runs on an Web browser. MappEnvWeb has three Web pages where each has its own function. First one is the data browsing page where plant pictures and their metadata are provided. Second one is the data download page where all the shared data among all the users can be downloaded. The last one is the page to create an event for data collection. In this presentation, the benefits and the pitfalls of both MappEnv and MappEnvWeb will be discussed. To this end, the usage of both applications will be introduced.
